Hurricane Irma Mortgage Relief

We Help Clients In the Greater Fort Lauderdale Area Get Back on Their Feet

At the Loan Lawyers, we stand by those who have been affected by the devastation of Hurricane Irma as they attempt to recover and rebuild their communities. Our team of lawyers is focused on providing the support and assistance that our clients need during this difficult transition period. We work with our clients, partners, and Federal and local authorities to help bring relief to struggling homeowners. Furthermore, we are committed to helping Fort Lauderdale families, neighborhoods, and communities recover in the months and years ahead.

Recently, Fannie Mae, the government-backed agency that own millions of mortgages across the country, has authorized loan servicers to suspend or reduce payments on single-family mortgages for up to 90 days. Additional payment forbearance of up to 12 months is also available to homeowners’ in certain circumstances.

For Major Disaster Areas where federal Individual Assistance programs have been extended (this includes areas impacted by Hurricane Irma), your mortgage company is authorized to:

  • Suspend mortgage payments for up to 12 months
  • Waive assessments of penalties or late fees
  • Suspend reporting mortgage loan delinquencies to the nation's credit bureaus

It is important to note that forbearance is not automatic, and you will need to contact your loan servicer for assistance. Depending on each individual case, your deferred payments can either be added to the end of your loan or will become due in a lump sum or according to a payment plan. The interest on your mortgage will still accrue, but there will not be any negative marks on your credit score.
