Consumers are constantly inundated with pre-approved credit offers from phone calls, text messages, and emails. Many clients ask if they can limit or eliminate these offers. To stop receiving prescreened offers of credit and insurance, consumers may either opt out of receiving them for five years or opt out of receiving them permanently. This may be done online or by phone. However, to opt-out permanently, an individual must return a signed Permanent Opt-Out Election form, which will be provided after the initiation of a request.
To accomplish this, certain personal information, including a home telephone number, name, Social Security number, and date of birth must be provided. However, be advised that the information provided is confidential and will be used only to process the request to opt out.
To permanently opt-out by mail, send a written request to each of the major consumer reporting companies. Of course, as mentioned above, the request must include a home telephone number, name, Social Security number, and date of birth.

Opting-out from prescreened lists has no effect on a consumer's ability to apply for or obtain credit or insurance. Requests to opt out are processed within five days, but it may take up to 60 days before a consumer stops receiving prescreened offers. Persons who change their mind may also opt back in using the same aforementioned contact information to opt-out.
Opting-out line stops prescreened solicitations that are based on lists from the major consumer reporting companies. Solicitations may continue for credit and insurance based upon lists from other types of entities, such as local merchants, religious groups, charitable organizations, professional associations, alumni groups, and companies with which you already conduct business. To stop mail from these organizations and groups, consumers must contact each source directly.
The federal government's National Do Not Call Registry is a mechanism for reducing telemarketing calls received at home. To register a phone number or to get information about the registry, visit www.donotcall.gov, or call 1-888-382-1222 from the phone number intended for registration. Calls should decrease within 31 days of registering a phone number.
The Direct Marketing Association's (DMA) Mail Preference Service (MPS) lets consumers opt out of receiving unsolicited commercial mail from many national companies for five years. The DMA also has an Email Preference Service (eMPS) to help reduce unsolicited commercial emails. Registration is free and good for six years.
